American Association of School Librarians (AASL) Annual Conference

When: Thursday October 27- Sunday October 30, 2011

Where: Minneaoplis, MN

Who/What: "Turning the Page: 15th National Conference & Exhibition" is the national conference for the AASL, which is the K-12 School Librarian division of the ALA.

Why: Professional development, networking, continuing education, inspiration, etc.

Registration: Well, this is a national conference, so registration is kinda steep. However, you can visit the exhibits for $25 (the exhibits do not include any of the sessions or keynote speakers, just the vendors and tables). Or, you can join AASL at the student member rate of $53 and then pay the on-site student member registration rate of $205 for the entire conference, which comes to $258, which is a better deal than registering for the entire conference at the on-site non-member rate of $455. There are lots of options--including attending for just one day--so be sure to check the AASL Registration website for more details.

Minneapolis Indie Xpo: November 5 & 6, 10am -5 pm

College of DuPage Press: Library Futures Update

MCTC LIT program will continue to host the College of DuPage Press Library Futures presentations. However, there are no presentations scheduled at this time. Here is an update from their website:

We’re on the move…

We are moving our teleconference production studios to a brand new facility. The relocation of College of DuPage’s Multimedia Services department will cause a brief interruption in teleconference production this fall. We are busy planning the finest continuing education and professional development programming to a nationwide community of library professionals for the spring of 2012. Our new studio is well-equipped to bring you the same high-quality programming you expect streamed directly to your facility.

Library Futures will return soon…

College of DuPage and the Library Learning Network are planning two Library Futures teleconferences this season, beginning in 2012. Dates are yet to be determined. Detailed information on those two programs will be posted as soon as it is available. During this transition, the Library Futures staff is carefully reviewing your feedback from last season in order to develop programs that will be most beneficial to you.

Fly Away Zine Mobile visits MCTC Library

On Tuesday, Sept 20th from 3-6 p.m., the Fly Away Zine Mobile will visit the MCTC Library. The van will be parked immediately outside the main library entrance on the MCTC Plaza at 1501 Hennepin Ave, Mpls, MN 55403. Zines will be on display, the curator of the collection will be available to talk about the project, and there will be a mini zine-making workshop going on there as well. See you there!

Learn to communicate in a powerful and effective way with the corporate and organizational decision-makers in your institutions.

You’ll learn how to predict and prepare for organizational challenges and opportunities and develop your value proposition and an individual value statement -- your elevator speech. This class will be fun, practical, and hands-on. 

The presenters have taught this course at Medical Library Association regional chapter and national meetings with good reviews from participants. They look forward to bringing the course to SLA in MN!

At 8pm, the Type Truck and the Fly Away Zine Mobile will pull into the Zine Apothecary (3310 15th Ave S) for the afterparty potluck. Bring the bounty from your CSA or a treat to share, and we'll take over the alley with underground press and zine-y fun times.
