Department Description:
The Children’s Library at the Minneapolis Central Library primarily serves children from birth to 6th grade, families, and teachers. The Children’s Library has a unique and historic collection of more than 120,000 children’s books, DVDs, and audio materials that circulate to the youth and families of the Twin Cities area and beyond.
 
Commitment:
One Semester, 8 hours per week, January 2012 through May 2012.

Wage:
This is an unpaid position which could be for college credit or work experience.

Duties:
Duties may include the following:
  • Provide direct information services in the Children’s Library
  • Assist with collection development work, to include:
    • Pull books and other materials from collections for review
    • Process books and other materials through catalog
    • Perform general collection maintenance activities, such as shelving, sorting, labeling, etc.
  • Create and supplement book displays
  • Provide support for children’s programming.

Requirements:
Candidate must currently be enrolled in a library program or be a recent library graduate. Applicant must have completed coursework in information services, and have an interest in youth services and/or collection development. Candidate should not have completed an internship with Hennepin County Library in the past.

MN Internship: Preservation Internship, Hennepin County Library

The Preservation department with Hennepin County Library plays a vital role in ensuring the long-term viability of the Library’s print collections through repair and restoration measures, book binding, preservation photocopy, and other preservation methods. The Bindery/Preservation department also performs a consulting and educational function for staff on preservation matters

Commitment:
One semester, 6 to 10 hours per week, January 2012 – May 2012.

Wage:
This is an unpaid position which could be for college credit or work experience.

Location:
Minneapolis Central Library, 300 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis

Duties:
Duties may include the following:
• Preservation bookbinding
• Construction of preservation enclosures for library materials
• Simple mending of library materials

Outreach promotes the use of the library by the nontraditional or under-served user through the development and support of programs and services.

The
Outreach Department's goal is to bring the experience of the library and its resources to the community - in their homes, senior living facilities, rehabilitation centers, the correctional facilities of the county and through events held at the library.

Commitment:
One semester, 4 to 8 hours per week, January 2012 to May 2012.

Main work location is at the Ridgedale Library, 12601 Ridgedale Dr., Minnetonka, with some work in Downtown Minneapolis at the Juvenile Detention Center, in Plymouth at the Adult Correctional Facility, and in Minnetonka at the County Home School.

· Provide direct information services working at the At Home phoneline
· Assist in classifying / organizing Adult Correctional Facility collection
· Assist in compiling and analyzing data for Adult Correctional Facility programs and
  Deposit Collection booktalking program
· Assist in creating documents for use in Large Print book club kits, including writing
   book discussion questions
· Assist with Read to Me, a family literacy program, at the Adult Correctional Facility
· Assist in the creation, implementation and evaluation of a reading interest survey
  for use with the Deposit Collection sites, at the Adult Correctional Facility, and at      
· Assist in weekly filling of information requests from Adult Correctional Facility the
  County Home School     
· Plan, develop, and implement a book discussion group at the Adult Correctional

Circulation Services
provides access to library collections through processing materials, facilitating patron use of technology, and explaining HCL circulation policies to build confident, self-reliant users and fulfill Hennepin County Library’s mission to nourish minds, transform lives and build community together.  The goal of this service area is to provide circulation and materials handling service that is responsive to our patrons needs by using research-based information when developing library services.

Duties:

  • Coordinate the analysis of data from library circulation statistics.

Position Summary:

Help build the creation of a collection inventory of MPR’s physical holdings of reels, DATs, CDs and other media.  This position is funded through a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting as part of the American Archive initiative to build a comprehensive public broadcast inventory.

Position Responsibility: 

  • Pull media (reels, DATs, CDs) from the archive, enter the item’s information into a database, attaching any relevant scans and images to the record
  • Ensure information is captured with attention to detail and consistency
  • Understand various metadata standards (PB Core, Dublin Core)
  • Document  and report anomalies to Inventory Manager
  • Track your work and report your progress to the Inventory Manager
Required Education and Experience:

Computer competency with a comfort working in various databases, software and platforms.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Understanding of the importance of metadata application, the need for preservation of cultural heritage and a desire to accurately represent the item in an inventory
  • Demonstrated experience working in large collections
  • Experience processing collections, particularly data entry

Ramsey County Library Internship

Looking for a late summer or fall internship? Check this one out!

Position: Comic Book Club Intern (unpaid)
Library: Ramsey County Library, North St. Paul, MN

Description: The Comic Book Club is a partnership between the North St. Paul Community Center and the North St. Paul branch of the Ramsey County Library, and sponsored by The Source Comics and Games. The Comic Book Club is open to anyone who is interested in reading comics, talking about comics, drawing comics or learning about the comic industry, but is primarily targeted to middle-schoolers and younger teens. There is a weekly Open Reading event at the Community Center, and there are special Comic Book Club events held monthly. As well as focusing on all things comic related, activities also include playing games and watching movies.

The Comic Book Club was founded by and is staffed by a Community Center volunteer, in conjunction with the Teen Librarian at Maplewood Library. One unpaid internship position is immediately available to work with the volunteer and Teen Librarian to coordinate Comic Book Club programming. This internship is a great opportunity to work directly with youth, and create a direct link between comic books and graphic novels and literacy.

Responsibilities Will Include:

  • Staffing the Open Reading Room each Tuesday from 4:00-6:00 p.m.
  • Staffing monthly Comic Book Club events on the third Thursday of the month from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
  • Work with Comic Book Club volunteer and Teen Librarian to brainstorm programming ideas
  • Work with The Source on donations and gaming/programming possibilities
  • Outreach with the greater comic book community for possible collaborations
  • Engage with youth in a meaningful manner to encourage ownership and relationship with the library
  • Coordinate snacks and clean up after club

Qualifications:

  • Minnesota Voluntary Certification, ALA-APA Library Support Staff Certification, MLIS, or current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate-level library information science program
  • Interest in programming for youth
  • Knowledge of and interest in comic books/graphic novels
  • Ability to work independently and on a team

Work Schedule: Two hours every Tuesday from 4-6 p.m.; Two hours the third Thursday from 6-8 p.m.

Duration: Four-month commitment required
