All kinds of conference info is coming out from ALA right now. Again, to make a point: the full ALA conference doesn't come any closer to Minnesota than Chicago - if you can at all afford it, please go! You will not regret it!

The ALCTS CCS Copy Cataloging Interest Group will meet during the ALA Meeting in Chicago on Saturday, July 11, from 10:30 AM to 12 noon. We're interested in all things copy cataloging, but for our next meeting we're particularly interested in the following topics:

* Copy cataloging for Special Collections.
* How to train copy catalogers in FRBR and RDA, FRBR being here already and RDA on its way.
* Copy cataloging for special formats, such as electronic resources.
* Copy cataloging and vendor records.

Are you doing something in any of these areas that you'd like to share with an eager audience? Would you like to help us explore any of these topics? If so, the Copy Cataloging Interest Group is the place for you! We're looking for people to speak to the group about any of these topics. If you would like to speak to the group, please contact Gene Dickerson, Chair, or Tatiana Barr, Vice-Chair/Chair Elect with your interest. We're looking for people to speak for about 15-20 minutes on any of the topics listed above. If you'd like to propose another topic you're interested in, let us know that, too. Tell us who you are and what topic you'd like to speak about. Don't be shy! Give us a try! If you want to nominate someone else to speak, let us know who he or she is, along with contact information, and we'll take it from there.

*A Thousand Words: Taking Better Photos for Telling Stories in Your Library*

Presented by: Helene Blowers, Michael Porter, and Cindi Trainor, Friday, July 10, 2009, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., in Chicago

If you want to learn how to capture library events more effectively and artistically, don’t miss this hands-on workshop in Chicago this July. Learn the Who, What and Why of shooting, sharing and reusing your library photos, and see how to use widgets and other tools to tell stories and engage your users in your digital space. Learn techniques for shooting and editing better photos, camera settings that make for the best photos, and the basics of editing an image. Privacy policies and Creative Commons will also be covered. The hands-on portion of this workshop will involve using flickr, getting to know your camera, and using desktop and online image editing tools.

Participants should bring a camera and laptop. Be sure to bring your camera's cable or a card reader for downloading photos to your computer.

A Learning Commons combines library and computer labs into a client-side organization both physical and virtual. Its central idea is a facility built on the idea that if THEY build it, they will use it as opposed to the current notion that if WE build it, they will use it.

The Learning Commons is a giant collaborative, the center of school culture, the showcase of excellence in teaching and learning, the center of school improvement, and, is the place where technology is transformed into a force for high level thinking and achievement.

Allison Zmuda and David Leortscher will explore the creation of such a center and will demonstrate and focus on the types of teaching and learning demonstrated in the Learning Commons that can radiate out from the Commons into the entire school. The audience will experiment with various models for transforming traditional learning experiences into high-level thinking, high tech, and collaborative experiences co-taught by classroom teachers, teacher librarians, teacher technologies, and/or other specialists in the school.

The presenters will explore the differences between academic computing and instructional computing that help push Web 2.0 tools into the mix of learning strategies to meet 21st Century Skills.

WiLSWorld 2009

Our opening day keynote is Joan Frye Williams. For more than 25 years, Joan Frye Williams has been a successful librarian, consultant, vendor, planner, trainer, evaluator, and user of library services. Since 1996, she has been an independent consultant specializing in innovation, technology, and the service needs and preferences of non-library "civilians." Her many clients include libraries of all types and sizes, library consortia, state library agencies, professional library associations, library boards, library vendors, and architects. Joan is best known as an acute—and sometimes irreverent—observer of emerging library trends, issues, and practices. She is an internationally recognized library futurist and designer of innovative library services. Joan is a WiLSWorld alumnus, having keynoted a conference a number of years ago. Our second day keynote is Karen Schneider. Karen is Community Librarian at Equinox, the support and development company for Evergreen open-source library software. She is a writer and librarian who has published over 100 articles and two books. Schneider's technology writing has been recognized in a variety of venues for being both lively and learned. From 2005 through 2007 she contributed to ALA Techsource. From 1995 to 2001, as the Internet Librarian columnist for American Libraries, Schneider consistently ranked in magazine surveys as AL's most popular author. Schneider is an enthusiastic speaker, presenter, and educator who in 2000 was named by PUBLIB as one of the top ten speakers in librarianship. Karen is also a WiLSWorld alumnus, keynoting one of our earliest conferences. See Karen's Free Range Librarian blog.

Andrew Nagy Senior Discovery Services Engineer for Serials Solution and the Lead Developer of VuFind, will present a breakout session comparing VuFind with the new Serials Solution product Summon, and how they can work together. Andrew is an open source evangelist and library technologist. Prior to joining Serial Solutions, he was the Technology Development Specialist for the Falvey Memorial Library at Villanova University where he was responsible for developing and implementing an innovative suite of applications to provide access to library collections on the Web. That certainly describes VuFind.

Dorothea Salo will present a talk entitled "Institutional Repositories: Rebirth of the Phoenix", discussing IRs, the rocky road they have traveled, and their prospects for the future. Dorothea is Digital Repository Librarian at the UW-Madison. She has been identified by Library Journal as one of the "Movers & Shakers" for 2009. Her provocative and thought-provoking take on the state of IRs is outlined in "Innkeeper at the Roach Motel", published in the Fall 2008 issue of Library Trends. This one-hour session will take the fear out of business reference by breaking the broad concept of business research down into three simple tasks that will answer most of your patrons' questions: industry, company, and customer research.
