What do you think... Paralibrarian?

Dear Fellow Paralibrarian,

Let's convince Library Journal that we are proud PARALIBRARIANS. Each year Library Journal honors a paralibrarian (support staff, paraprofessional librarian) with a wonderful award recognizing the contributions and accomplishments of a notable paralibrarian, and "three to watch". It's a wonderful award and opportunity to spread the message about paralibrarian careers and what can be done in librarianship with or without a masters degree.

The November issue of ALA Associates has wonderful articles and information on the nomination process.

http://associates.ucr.edu/journal/

I am asking you to support a name update, to bring the LJ award into the 21st century! When I read "Paraprofessional of the Year" I ask myself, paraprofessional what? It's a generic term. Para means to stand by and support. Paramedics and paralegals define the professional within their name. Paralibrarians are beginning to embrace that concept also.

Please send an email to one or all of the following people who are on the Library Journal award committee. Tell them you support the update from paraprofessional to PARALIBRARIAN of the Year. These are wonderful people who already advocate for paralibrarians and are eager to hear from us.

Please send your email today with a simple message:

John Berry jberry@mediasourceinc.com

Rebecca Miller miller@mediasourceinc.com Brian Kenney, LJ editorial director bkenney@mediasourceinc.com

As a Paralibrarian/Librarian, I support an update of the name of the Library Journal Award to "Paralibrarian of the Year". I applaud Library Journal for honoring paralibrarians, and hope the cover of the March 1, 2011 issue features an accomplished person with the recognition: Library Journal 2011 Paralibrarian of the Year.

Feel free to add your personal message too.

thanks,

Allison

Teach Your Children to Surf the Internet Safely

Your children are the primary target of internet-based threats like computer viruses, adware, and spyware through the websites they often visit and misleading information they obtain. This is the reason why, as parents, it is important to discuss with your children how to surf the net safely and away from any internet-based threats.

Downloads

Downloading files from unknown source is one of the most common reasons why the computer is infected with viruses and spyware. Free games, flash animations, bundled emoticons, jokes, screen savers, and even free spyware removal downloads are potentially unsafe. Teach your children to evaluate the safety of the site before clicking on these ads or tell them to ask you first before making any moves.

Peer-to-Peer File Sharing

Free and downloadable peer-to-peer file-sharing software or p2p software has the potential to transmit internet-based threats from one computer to another. This is why it is evenly important to make sure that your kids stay away from and using these programs.

The rule of the thumb is, never in any circumstances will you permit your kids to download programs from the internet without your say-so. Ensure this by observance their account "restricted".

Safe Sites

You can't detect if a particular site contains internet-based threats on your own so if your kids are young sufficient to use kids-friendly web browsers, then it is advisable to do so. These web browsers are downloadable - some are free while some come with a rational price. The good thing regarding these web browsers is that they only allow access to pre-determined and pre-scanned websites so your children are assured good sites every time they use the internet.

Junk mails

If your children have their own email addresses, make sure that you tell them the danger of downloading attachments from unknown senders for these often contain dangerous and malicious file that can corrupt your computer.

Misleading Dialog Boxes

You often see dialog boxes saying: "Your computer might be at risk!" or "Warning! You may have critical errors on your PC." "Or your computer is running slowly." You may ignore these but your kids may not. So it is very, very important that you tell your children that whenever they see any ambiguous dialog boxes appearing or just popped out from their screen, ignore them or call your attention immediately.

Explain to your kids that you tell them these not to limit their pleasure on the internet but by making sure that they are protected from any destruction these internet-based threats can bring.

Protect Your Children from Internet Addiction

Internet addiction isn't ordinary to parents and teachers; and it isn't that extensively recognized in the medical community as well. But it doesn't indicate that you can ignore it as a serious health condition. Here are the things you be supposed to know about Internet addiction…

Internet Addiction Symptoms

There are several symptoms visible to kids with internet addictions. Physical symptoms comprise headaches and migraines associated with the use of the computer, carpal tunnel syndrome, backaches, neglect of personal hygiene, lack of sleep and inconsistent sleeping patterns, and dry eyes.

Psychological symptoms include inability to end the use of the computer, depression when not at the computer, neglect of friends and family, significant increase of time in using the computer, and emotion of strong happiness while at the computer.

Precautionary Procedures

Make sure that you place your internet-connected computer in an area of the house anywhere you can monitor their use and not in their bedrooms where they can freely use the internet as often as they would like. Create a list of rules that specially state the time they are allowed to use the internet and on to what purpose they can use it. Make sure you do this in the beginning to prevent uncontrollable use.

If you see signs of internet compulsion, ask yourself if your kids' use of the internet affects their concert at school, relationship with friends and family, and overall health. If it does, make some restrictions on the use of the internet but don't ban the use of it.

Take time to sit with your kids when they use the internet.

Keep a good firewall program or website filtering software to make certain that your kids don't enter pornographic sites and those that contain graphic images of violence and gore. Often, kids on pre-teens and teenaged years start to busy themselves browsing through these sites so if your computer blocks them, your kids will divert themselves to other much meaningful sites… well that is the theory.

Teach your kids about their responsibility and accountability on the use of the internet. These ideals will keep them guided on the dos and don'ts of using the internet. And to end with, act as a good example. Take note that you are seen as their role model so if they see no one to go after, any warnings, restrictions, and other forms of preventive measures will do no good.

Review About the Different Anti Virus Protection Software

It is a truth that more and more people are using the broadband internet to pay for the items they need in their everyday lives. Some people even shop for their foodstuff online to save travel time. There are also people who like better paying their utility bills above the internet.

Because more and more people are using the internet to pay for goods and services, there are also increasing numbers of people who also wants to take advantage of the internet to make money illegally. Cyber criminals are a new type of criminals that steals cash from people through the use of the internet. They develop softwares that enables them to identify about your personal and financial information. This software is called spyware.

Some develops viruses to make money out of it by simultaneously selling a program that get rids of the virus. Others are pure hackers who develop viruses just for the sake of fun in destroying other people’s computer archive.

Because of this increasing threat, it is now suggested that people should install Anti Virus Protection Software in their private computers. This particular software can fight viruses, prevent spyware from invading your computer, and it can also prevent a hacker from taking control of your computer.

It is recommended that you should at least have all the protection features in just one software since the programming of the dissimilar malicious software in the internet is very different from one another. Viruses and spyware are very dissimilar; therefore, antivirus software will not be effective in protecting your computer against spyware.

There are dissimilar kinds of Anti Virus Protection Software offered in the market today. Because of this, it would be very difficult for you to choose which Anti Virus Protection Software you should purchase. Since all of the companies claim that they are the best in the business, it can be very confusing for you in choosing which software is really the best.

In order for you to at least have an idea on which software is the best, you have to take a look at the software review in order to know about the dissimilar opinions of different people who have used the software sooner than. Of course, the more people who say positive things about the software, the more likely the Anti Virus Protection Software is one of the top software available that offers optimum protection against malicious software and hackers popping out of the internet everyday.

Reviews are an essential part of purchasing anything. With a review, you can reinforce your opinion and your decision in whether you want to buy the software or not. It is important to convert the user reviews for Anti Virus Protection Software in order to know if the particular brand of the software is really worth your money.

Reading user reviews is like being paid to know the software improved. Besides, who else would have better knowledge about the software than the people who have used the software before? With a user review, you will know about the dissimilar capabilities of the software and know about the pros and cons.

So, if you are confused on which Anti Virus Protection Software you should pay for, you should consider reading the user reviews in order to get an idea on which one you be supposed to buy.

Be your equipment and games dirt free. Be sore to keep wires from tangling and organize your magazine subscriptions, books, or Internet cheatsheet printouts. Maintenance is a duty that doesn’t have to trouble you as well as you do it routine in daily. The compensation of keeping a regular maintenance schedule shows that this space is important to you and that you have a right to remain it that way.

However it’s extremely vital to regard this place as a haven - not a put out of sight out. It’s not an area to hide from the kids, it’s not a place to shun home tasks, and it’s not a rest to live. If this special room is approached in the latter manner, you’ll soon discover it as a place of resentment, unmanageable habit, or even depression. Be careful, schedule time with the family, and enter your playroom at appropriate times. Cooperation from others will then get nearer naturally.

Catching Up To What's Important

Recently, I was working as an overworked and underpaid developer in the downtown Orlando area. I realized that I much rather have the time to work on my own things, as well as spend more time with my family. It bothered me that I had to work 50-60 hour weeks.

Since I've freed up my schedule somewhat, I've got more time to focus on EcommerceForEveryone.com , my own start-up. I've been able to add some cool enhancements, fix a few bugs, and generally add more value to the service.

So using some of my free time wisely, I've updated to the latest version of Mac Os X, Zend Studio, Mamp Pro, and some other goodies. Cleared my mac book pro, and reformatted it into a rock solid development environment, very nice if I say so myself. I've got all of the premium tools at my disposal now.

I haven't blogged for a little while, so I though it'd be a good thing to catch up for those that actually read/follow this blog. I'm much more active on my twitter account, and I was posting a little more regularly on my PuReWebDev blog until I got lazy and stopped posting (bad habit).

Just as a follow up to my previous posting, nothing has happened to mysql as yet, I feared they'd be extinguished once Oracle bought Sun (which owned mysql at the time).

Not a whole lot of items of import to share at the moment, but I'll stop by and post some more once I've got more upgrades completed to E4E, maybe even post a few screen shots of the work.
