Few experiences lead to as many lifelong rewards as a summer spent at a music or art camp. Too often, youngsters with a creative bent are not as popular as the athletes and cheerleaders at their school. Art camp or music camp not only improves skills, but can do wonders for the self-esteem of these young people because the experience allows them to be surrounded by like minded people where their contributions are valued.
Those who already play an instrument can work on their prowess. This can potentially lead to enough improvement to be stepped up in the school band or orchestra when a new school year begins. A good rounded music camp will expose campers to a variety of musical experiences, including composing, directing, performing and appreciation of a vast array of styles, from classical to jazz and everything between. Of course there will also be lessons offered for those who instruments are their voices. While some will focus on trendy rock and roll or rap, others will teach opera or song and dance numbers more likely to be featured in Broadway shows.
The high ratio of teachers to campers at a top rated camp allows time for some individual instruction and attention as well as the formation of small performing groups. Most of the counselors will either have experience working with youngsters, degrees in music or art and/or practical professional experience, making them highly qualified to teach young enthusiastic campers.
The same holds true for art camp, where aspiring young artists may not only improve on their techniques, they may also discover new art mediums they may wish to experiment with. For example, a painter might find that rendering a subject in three dimensions is more satisfying than simply putting it on canvas and that sculpture is really their medium of choice. Others may experiment with pottery-making, jewelry design, ceramics or digital photography, finding new ways to express their creative personalities.
Some art and music camps offer individual lessons in addition to the group activities. This gives those who are really motivated an opportunity to improve or expand their talents. While kids may want to bring their own materials for their preferred craft, a well equipped facility offers all the materials necessary for a rounded learning experience. For art focused campers, this might include pottery wheels, kilns, sewing machines, paints, easels and anything else that can be found in a well-furnished studio, as well as photography black rooms, cameras with a range of lenses, and of course materials for those who wish to make jewelry. Music students will find stages, microphones, supplementary instruments and instructions in the use of everything they might need to improve their personal performances.
At the end of each session, most camps will provide a format for showcasing talents. Musicians will probably be able to take part in a live performance, while young art campers may display their work in a show, and will certainly be able to take home finished art pieces in a portfolio.
Of course, all well rounded summer camps for younger kids will also include outdoor activities such as swimming, boating, or hiking along with the specialized lessons and classes, making for a great well rounded experience for any talented child. While most people think that camp means a summer camp, there are facilities that offer camps year round. Some may offer weekend get-aways, or vacation sessions in addition to those during the summer months. Regardless of the type of camp your child chooses, the most important thing to take away from the experience is an enhanced sense of self-esteem ? a priceless gift that any parent would be proud to bestow on a deserving offspring.
