MLA 2011 Annual Conference

Registration is open for the Minnesota Library Association (MLA) 2011 Annual Conference. The conference will be held in Duluth this year from Wednesday, October 12 through Friday, October 14, 2011. Attending the MLA Conference is a great opportunity for professional development, networking, seeing great speakers/presentations, and more. It also looks nice on a resume when applying for library jobs. :)

You may want to consider volunteering; not only is this good resume fodder, but "enrolled library students" can also get FREE registration for the conference by simply volunteering a few hours of their time at the event.

If you don't want to volunteer, you should register by September 9 for lower "Early Bird" prices. Early Bird registration for the full conference is $175 for MLA members and $250 for non-members. After September 9, those rates go up to $225 and $300, respectively. In order to register in advance, you must do so by September 30. You can even register online.

There are some cheaper options if you register for just one or two days of the conference. You can view all the options here. There is also an online schedule for the conference if you want to look that over and plan accordingly.

ARLD Day

ARLD Day 2011

The Everywhere Library

presented by the Academic and Research Libraries Division in partnership with the Public Libraries Division of the Minnesota Library Association

Last year, Academic and Research Libraries (ARLD) Day was all about getting users into the library building. This year, we’ll look at serving our patrons where they are. We know they work from their computers at home and in their offices, but they’re also increasingly accessing our services and information via mobile devices. What do libraries need to be thinking about? What services are successful? What technologies and metadata are required to make access easy and understandable? Join us on April 29 at ARLD Day 2011: The Everywhere Library to find out.

Who should attend:

· Academic librarians

· Public librarians

· School librarians

· Special librarians

· Anyone interested in mobile technologies

What to expect:

· Keynote speaker Jason Griffey from the University of Tennessee

· Special ARLD feature: Innovators Award presentation

· Lunch with your colleagues

· Afternoon breakout sessions: what’s happening in the upper Midwest

New ARLD Day Features:

· Innovators Award Presentation

· Technology Petting Zoo (ipads, Kindles, Nooks, and more!)

· Lightning Rounds

· More prizes than ever: eBook reader, MLA Conference 2011 Registration (in Duluth), Duluth Bookstore gift certificate

· Virtual attendance option
Out state? Unable to get to ARLD Day? You can still participate in part of ARLD Day through our virtual option for the keynote, Q&A, and Innovators Award!

Keynote speaker

Jason GriffeyJason Griffey
Associate Professor and Head of Library Information Technology at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga

The Everywhere Patron
Throughout the world, the majority of people who have access to the Internet are not using a computer. They are relying on their cell phone as their primary interface for listening to music, watching television, reading books, communicating with friends, and finding answers. As phones become more and more capable, fewer and fewer people find that they need their computer on a day to day basis to stay in touch with their infosphere. Libraries need to be at the forefront of these changes, as well as looking forward and preparing for the future of information interaction.

We will examine the upcoming rise of the superphone, the next-generation of mobile phone services, and how the next 3-5 years will reshape everything about information interactions.

"Read Dating"

This looks like fun, if I were single...

~~~
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Oct 1, 2009
If you’d like more information about this topic, please contact the MLA office at 651-999-5343 (toll-free 877-867-0982) or office@mnlibraryassociation.org.
Minnesota Library Association announces
An Evening of “Read Dating”
Are you reading so much that dating has fallen by the wayside? Then come join us for an evening of Read Dating!
Looking for good times as well as good books? Maybe you should try “Read Dating!” It’s like speed-dating, only we’ll use books to help break the ice with other like-minded dateable bibliophiles.
The first round is a mixer. Participants will draw a question such as “What was your favorite book as a teen?” and mingle around the room asking their question of other participants. The second round will be timed dating, when daters will discuss their favorite books (no more than three) in a one-to-one setting for a few minutes before moving to a new literary partner. At the end of the night, if like literary minds want to match up… well, that would be up to them.
The event is suitable for single men and women. Please bring a book you love, hate, have recently read, or just want to talk about.
Event Details:
Thursday, October 29, 2009 from 6:00–8:30 PM,
Spill the Wine, 1101 Washington Ave S. Minneapolis, MN 55415
$15 MLA members, $30 reading public, additional $10 for late or walk-in registrations
Visit www.mnlalibraryassociation.org to register. Registration is required and closes on Friday, October 23, 2009.
Co-sponsored by Reader’s Advisory Round Table of the Minnesota Library Association and Spill the Wine
The term “Read Dating” was borrowed with cheerful permission from the University Book Store, Seattle, WA.
Minnesota Library Association Conference Needs Volunteers
Volunteering to help at conferences is a great way to meet people and often you can negotiate a discount on registration or get some other perk. :)
~~~
Call for Conference Volunteers

Volunteers are urgently needed to assist with important functions at the MLA Conference on October 14-16, 2009 in St. Cloud. The overall success of the conference depends not only on the quality of its programs, which are excellent, but on the efficiency and effectiveness of its arrangements. As in years past, numerous volunteers are needed to insure that everything goes smoothly in busy areas such as Registration and the Silent Auction. Please consider giving two hours of your time during the conference to helping with these important tasks.
To find out the dates/times people are needed and to sign up as a volunteer, email conference volunteer coordinator Janet Urbanowicz at jurban65@gmail.com. She will add your name to the schedule and respond to confirm your assignment.

Minnesota Library Association Conference Coming Up

The Minnesota Library Association's annual conference will be held on October 24-26, 2007, in Mankato. The bad news is that the Early Bird discounted registration period is already over. The good news is there's a not-quite-so-early-bird discount available until September 9th. Check out the conference program at:

http://www.mnlibraryassociation.org/conf_2007/emlaprogram_2007.pdf

Yours truly will be presenting, with Nicole Herold of Ramsey County Library, on Wednesday, October 24, in Session B5 - "Top 3 Cataloging Things to Spend Your Time On." Tom Eland and I will be at an information table for our program as well.

Come spend some time schmoozing with your library colleagues, and network, network, network!
